In the 11th-13th centuries the banks of the Gauja were populated by the Livs, an ethnos with an ancient and unique culture. The evidence of the Liv culture can be found in several places in Turaida. The mighty medieval Turaida castle, an outstanding monument of archeology, architecture and history is an important element in Latvia’ s cultural and historical heritage as it has witnessed major military conflicts in the area from the 13th to the 18th century. Enjoy the breathtaking view from the Main Tower, listen to the stories and legends related to this area. Sigulda Castle ruins have major historical and cultural significance, too. The castle was built in 1207 by the Sword Brothers’ Order. You can climb up the North Tower, the Main Gate Tower, enjoy the medieval atmosphere and even try on the knights’ armour. Sigulda is the centre of different sports activities. The Sigulda Luge and Bobsleigh Track is a training venue for Latvia’s Olympic team and hosts international and national scale competitions.
