Vilnius has preserved an impressive complex of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and classical buildings as well as its medieval layout and natural setting. Vilnius Old Town is an outstanding architectural complex in Eastern and Central Europe. In the Old Town you can see the Gediminas Castle, the symbol of Vilnius and Lithuania and the Cathedral Square. Vilnius University, one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe, deserves special attention. It was founded by Jesuits in the 16th century. It has played a significant part in the cultural life of Lithuania and the neighbouring countries. Trakai is a lovely little town surrounded by lakes. Duke of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Gediminas founded the fortress 28 km to the west from Vilnius, making it the capital. Trakai is also known for the Karaim community (people speaking the Turkish language), who have lived there since the 14th century and have preserved their traditions. You will see kenesa – a Karaim sanctuary and Karaim houses in Trakai, and the national dishes (the most popular is kybyn – a small pastry stuffed with minced meat) of this ethnic group can be tasted at the Karaim Restaurant.
