Riga Central Market Traditional Latvian Food tasting Tour

Come and Taste Riga at the Central Market

Our Riga food tour takes you inside Riga Central Market, one of Europe’s largest and most vibrant markets, where you’ll discover traditional Latvian food, local flavours and the stories behind them.

Housed in impressive former Zeppelin hangars, the market has been one of Riga’s most recognisable landmarks since the 1930s. Inside, you’ll find an incredible variety of local products, from fresh and smoked fish, meat and dairy to seasonal vegetables, berries, pickles, traditional rye bread and much more.

Our guide will take you through the market’s colourful pavilions and introduce you to the tastes and traditions of Latvia. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to try 20+ different local food products and specialities, including several varieties of cheese, meats, fish, bread, hemp pesto and other traditional Latvian favourites.

More than just a tasting experience, this Riga food tour is an opportunity to discover the city through its flavours, aromas and local traditions. Come hungry and curious and experience one of Riga’s most authentic and lively places.

Latvian cuisine is heavily based on meat, fish and dairy products. Vegetarians are welcome to join the tour, and we will adapt the tastings where possible with prior notice. However, some traditional foods may not have suitable alternatives.

Legend

A City Can Be Tasted

They say you can understand a city by tasting what its people eat.

For generations, Riga Central Market has been a place where people come together to buy, sell, gossip, meet friends and discover what’s in season. Behind every piece of rye bread, smoked fish, pickled vegetable or sweet treat is a small part of Latvia’s story.

Latvian cuisine has been shaped by the country’s forests, fields, rivers and coastline, as well as by the many cultures that have passed through the region over the centuries. Some flavours have remained part of everyday life for generations, while others may surprise you.

On our Riga food tour, you won’t simply taste local products. You’ll discover the stories, traditions and everyday habits behind them.

Come hungry, stay curious and discover Latvia one bite at a time.

Check if all fields are

Is the Riga Central Market Food Tasting Tour suitable for vegetarians?

  • Vegetarians can join the tour, and we will do our best to offer suitable alternatives. However, some traditional Latvian foods included in the tasting experience contain meat or fish, so vegetarians may not be able to try everything on the tour.

Can vegans join the tour?

  • Unfortunately, this tour is not well suited for vegans. Many of the traditional Latvian foods and tastings included on the tour contain animal products, and we cannot provide enough suitable alternatives to offer the full experience.

Can you accommodate a gluten-free diet?

  • Yes, a gluten-free version of the tour is possible. Please let us know about your dietary requirements in advance so we can prepare accordingly.

Is the tour suitable for children?

  • Children are welcome to join the tour. However, please keep in mind that this is a food tasting experience primarily designed for adults. We try a variety of traditional Latvian foods, and the experience may be less enjoyable for children who are very picky eaters. Parents know their children best and can decide whether the tour would be entertaining for them.

How much food is included in the tour?

  • The tour includes several tastings of traditional Latvian food and drinks at Riga Central Market. The exact selection may vary depending on availability and the season.

Should I come hungry?

  • We recommend coming with an appetite! There are several tastings throughout the tour, although the experience is designed as a food tasting tour rather than a full restaurant-style meal.

Do I need to book in advance?

  • We recommend booking in advance to secure your place on the tour, especially during the busy tourist season.
